TO THE PUBLIC

E. & T. Kite having- purchased of John A. Paxton, late editor of the Philadelphia Directory, his right to the work, and it being their intention to issue it annually, they have to request that all re- movals may be made known to them as soon as con- venient. It will obviate many difficulties they now labour under, and be a means of making the work

more correct. The persons employed to note the

residence of the families, it must be admitted, are liable to err, particularly in the spelling : to counter- act the effects of which, references are made to names whose pronunciation are similar. Yet with all the care which has been taken, it cannot be ex- pected that the work will be entirely perfect. To those acquainted with the frequent removals in large cities, no apology will be deemed requisite on this head. But though many errors may be found, let It also be recollected that a variety of information is furnished. The present edition contains, exclu- sive of the residence of the inhabitants, much mat- ter interesting to the citizens at large. A correct list of the civil officers of the national Government, and the Representatives in Congress from the dif- ferent states are contained in it, and also the names oi the officers and representatives of the state of Penn- sylvania, of the city officers and councils, together with such extracts from the Revenue Laws as were deemed of consequence to be generally known.
